Happy School Board Recognition Week! The Minnesota School Boards Association has declared February 21 through 25 a time to raise awareness about the often-underestimated role boards of education play in shaping our public schools.

It’s true—school boards, like the state legislature, have a huge impact on what happens in the classroom because they make policy. But as voters, we can have an impact, too; we elect these policy makers, and their job is to listen to what we, their constituents, have to say.

So if you weren't already planning to, celebrate School Board Recognition Week by taking time to 1) find out more about what your local school board is doing in your school district and 2) exercise your voter power by encouraging the elected officials deciding education policy to do right by our kids (learn more about the three policy goals of our first legislative campaign, Minnesota School Emergency in Effect).

Here's to putting the "public" back into public education!
