Vallay Varro was a founding state executive director. She now serves as the president of 50CAN.

With the end of the legislative session swiftly approaching, political stalemate continues. The Governor and legislature still cannot find common ground on Minnesota’s budget, and that disagreement is keeping them from talking about an important policy for Minnesota’s kids: building a robust teacher evaluation system.

Minnesota leaders have two options: they can either make a deal on the omnibus bill before midnight on Monday, May 23, when the session officially ends, or they can head into special session and take up the issue there.

Either way, they will eventually have to come up with a compromise. And it’s up to us to make sure that deal, whenever it’s made, includes a teacher evaluation system.

If you tell your lawmakers one thing all year, tell them this: teacher effectiveness needs to happen this year. Great teachers are our best weapons in the fight against the achievement gap, but without a good teacher evaluation policy, we have no way of knowing who those great teachers are. Click here to take action.

In this final sprint of our campaign, your voice will make all the difference. Please join us in elevating this issue and making sure Minnesota’s leaders do what they committed to do at the beginning of the legislative session: build a system to give every Minnesota child a great teacher.
