MINNEAPOLIS, MN—Today Daniel Sellers, executive director of MinnCAN, released the following statement in response to the Minneapolis Public Schools Board of Directors' selection of Dr. Paez as the district's new superintendent, pending contract negotiations:

“As a Minneapolis parent and graduate of Minneapolis Public Schools, I would like to congratulate Dr. Sergio Paez on being selected as the new MPS superintendent and to thank the Board of Directors for conducting an open, transparent interview process. Now, the real work begins. Having selected Superintendent Paez as the best choice to lead the district, the Board must trust him to lead. Let's grant him the autonomy he needs to refocus the district on what matters most: helping all children excel academically.

“MPS is home to an increasingly diverse student population, with each child bringing tremendous assets to our schools and community, and to our state's collective future. And yet, MPS is also home to some of the nation's worst achievement gaps. I believe that, under Superintendent Paez's leadership, we can change this and make MPS a leader in the state and the nation. By prioritizing racial equity and guaranteeing that historically underserved students and families have the best teachers, resources and facilities, Dr. Paez and the Board can ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed.”
