On Monday the Minnesota Senate voiced overwhelming support for scouting Minnesota’s MVPs: Most Valuable Principals by passing S.F. 2213, which would tie 35 percent of a principal’s evaluation to student learning, With a bipartisan vote of 55 to 6, Minnesota Senators signaled that they know all too well that leadership matters a lot.
As the captains of our public schools, it’s up to principals to foster a learning environment where students excel academically, and teachers develop and thrive. We need to cultivate great school leaders by identifying which principals are succeeding and which are faltering, and then make sure they get the help that they need or the recognition that they deserve.
Right now state law ties 35 percent of a teacher’s evaluation to how much their students are learning. It’s only fair that principals be held to the same standard.
The game clock is counting down for the 2012 legislative session. In the few remaining days, team MinnCAN is hopeful the House will follow the leadership of the Senate and move the companion bill, H.F. 2677, so this important effort can go to Governor Dayton’s desk.
